READING, LIBRARY AND Accelerated Reader (A.R.)
Silent Reading and Library Info:
1. Students are expected to have a valid library book at school at all times. When they finish assignments, students should read in class.
2. We will use class book sets and literature circles for the majority of our AR points until we are moved in to the new building and we have access to a school-wide library again. Students will use classroom AR books to complete the remainder of their 10 point goal.
3. Silent reading will be practiced daily. Good readers are made, not born.
4. Students will be expected to read quietly without distracting others and stay on task.

Accelerated Reader Program:
1. AR will run for six weeks during each nine week period.
2. All students will be assigned an AR goal which will need to be met during each six week period. Fourth grade goals usually range from
about 14-25 points for average readers. Chapter books are mandatory. Picture books are only allowed with permission and for special
projects.
3. Books must be within the assigned reading range to count for AR points.
4. AR goals are assignments like any other. Students should strive to meet their goal each time. "Passing" AR includes meeting the point
requirement AND scoring an overall average of 80% on computerized AR tests.
5. Small AR parties will take place after each six week period for those who have passed. A large AR party will be held at the end of the year
for students who have met at least 3 of 4 AR goals.
6. Students will be given some time in class to read, but reading AT HOME will also be required. DO NOT wait until the last week to get serious
about reading. Pace yourself and enjoy the books!
7. We now have a school-wide Required Reading List. Students in 4th grade will be expected to read from the list and complete their part once we
are in the new building and have a school-wide library again.
