Have a question about how we do things?
Here are the answers!
Classroom Behavior Expectations:
1. Use the Golden Rule- treat others as you would like to be treated. I will not tolerate bullying, name-calling or rude behavior. 2. Raise your hand during classroom discussions and do not interrupt or talk over someone else. 3. Be a good listener and an active participant. 4. During discussions or while the teacher is presenting a lesson, do not leave your seat or work on unrelated items. 5. Use your time wisely and strive to complete all classwork daily. 6. Be polite and respectful to all teachers, classmates, substitutes, and visitors. Classroom Discipline Policy:
1. First -- Warning and discussion. 2. Second – Time out from recess, programs, activities, etc. 3. Third – Call to parents and loss of all privileges. 4. Fourth – Office visit, Saturday school, after school study, etc. Major offenses and/or multiple offenses of the same type could result in an immediate call to the parents and/or an office visit (without the completion of each step in sequence). Morning Procedure:
1. Put backpack, coat, lunch box, etc in the closet area. 2. Collect all items you will need for the day. 3. Check and empty your planner. 4. Place homework, notes, lunch money, etc in proper trays. 5. Sharpen 2 pencils and begin morning work or begin reading your library book in your seat by 8:10am. Leaving the Room:
1. Obtain verbal permission and take the hall pass 2. Please do not ask to leave during instruction time (unless it is a true emergency) as permission will NOT be given. We take several bathroom breaks throughout the day as a class, so every effort should be made to use those times wisely. 3. Return to the classroom as soon as possible and remember to follow the hallway procedure.
Hallway Procedure:
1. No talking while walking 2. Keep the space and pace of the line. 3. Keep hands and feet to yourself. 4. Walk single-file on the right-hand side. 5. Use proper manners. Holiday Party Procedure:
1) Holidays and celebrations will be recognized according to the School Handbook and the monthly School Calendar. 2) Major holidays will be recognized and parties may be planned. If (for religious or personal reasons) you wish your child not to participate, please advise me in advance so that other arrangements can be made. 3) The following Holiday Party guidelines are helpful: a. Individual snacks are best (and easiest). Please bring ALL necessary paper goods / items. My extras are packed away! b. Parents/volunteers should remain in the class to help distribute snacks and clean up afterward. c. Holiday Celebrations will always take place in the afternoon (unless otherwise noted). d. Keep in mind that we may have students with food allergies so please check and plan ahead of time. (NO NUTS) Scholastic Book Orders:
Occasionally I will send home paper book orders. Feel free to attach a check (made out to CES) or cash for the amount and send it to school with your child. You may also order directly online with the classroom code GMGF8. Click the button/link below: |
Homework Procedure:
1) Unless otherwise noted, all assignments will be due on the date assigned or BY 8:15am THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL DAY. (not 3 days later!) 2) All late work will be completed at recess. If a student has several late papers, they may be asked to sit out from other activities, or they may be sent to the office for completion or for possible detention. 3) Students who complete all homework all week (with the exception of one "Oops") will be in the "Homework Club." They will be able to participate in Fun Friday activities. Those who did not complete their work will attend study hall. 4) Point deductions are as follows: 1 day late = 10 % deduction, 2 days late = 50 % deduction. 3 days late = Zero credit, but must still be completed. 3) Long-term assignments will be due on a specified date (which will be arranged in advance). An explanation/information sheet (with due date) will be sent home specifically during these times. *Remember to check PowerSchool regularly for assignment due dates and missing work. *If unusual circumstances occur which prevent the completion of homework, please notify me immediately so we can discuss the possibility of an extension. ("I forgot," "We were busy at ballgames all night," etc are not unusual circumstances.) I do not intend for students to have piles of homework each night. Most students should have time to complete at least 80% of daily assignments in class. If your child has excessive homework, they may not be using their class time wisely. Please check their planners daily for notes or clues and sign it each time.
End of Day Procedure:
1. Planners will be USED and COMPLETED DAILY by students. (Parents, please sign daily!) 2. Pack all needed items for homework (books, papers, ruler, markers, etc) and library book. 3. Collect your mail and place it in your Daily Planner. 4. CLEAN YOUR DESK AREA. Fourth-graders should keep their desks clean without constant reminders. No one goes home leaving a mess behind! 5. WALK to exit the west hallway door (by our classroom). Students may not walk through the building to another exit. We ALL exit to the west together. 6. Make arrangements in ADVANCE. We can not call home to find out who is picking up students, if someone can come over after school, where grandma will meet them, what to do if it rains, etc. Make Up Work Procedure:
1) All students will be expected to complete all assignments given. It is the student's responsibility to gather and complete their work. 2) Students will have the same number of days to complete the work as they were absent. (Ex: absent 3 days = 3 days to complete make-up work.) 3) Special arrangements can be made in advance for those with planned absences and/or special circumstances.
Birthday Celebrations:
1. Birthdays in the upper elementary are celebrated on a smaller scale than before. Actual birthday “parties” are less popular in 4th and 5th grade. 2. Birthday snacks and recognition will take place on the second Friday of each month for ALL student birthdays in that month. 3. If you would like to bring snacks, please coordinate it with the other student birthdays in that month so we don't have four sets of cupcakes and no drinks (of course HEALTHY snacks are better)! Snacks will be at 2:30 unless other arrangements have been made. Weather:
We DO go outside, even when it is COLD. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather each day. Wearing shorts/sandals when it is 40° is not advisable and may result in your child staying indoors (or freezing!) at recess. Think like a Boy Scout and always be prepared. Responsibility:
I am a firm believer in cultivating responsibility. Students in my class are personally responsible for their own planners, notebooks, school supplies etc. If these items are lost it interferes with our daily routine. These items will need to be replaced quickly. Each textbook assigned to a student must be returned at the end of the year in good condition or replaced at current cost by the last day of school. |
